Books, I read in 2019

PS, I Love You

Author

PS, I Love You, published in 2004 was a debut novel of Cecelia Ahern.

Genre

Fictional, Romantic Novel

Story

It is the story of a young widow (Holly) whose husband (Gerry) has passed away. Gerry and Holly were friends, lovers, and, soulmates.

Before departure, Gerry planned to leave a few letters for Holly, to help ease her grief and provide support to start a new life. Each letter ends with a note "PS, I Love You".

He knows that after his death, only those letters will keep her pursuing further.

My favourite character

It is hard to choose a favourite, out of all the charming characters of this romantic novel.

Still, I would say my favourite character is Gerry. The way he made sure, to be with Holly even after his departure, made me love him the most.

Also, Sharon and Denise - Holly’s best friends, selflessly accompanied her in the entire healing process made my faith stronger in friendship more than ever.

My opinion about this book

I will appreciate the author's talent in showing the immense love and a strong bond between two people. Also, how the lifeless pieces of paper can give someone a new meaning of life.

Life is for living, but it always helps if an angel is watching for you.

Why should you read it?

We should read this book to understand the process of holding, letting go and learning to love again.

To understand the importance of doing our part to make it easy for our loved one(s) when we are not around.

Though it is hard to live without a person, we love the most, but this is what life is. People come and go, but we can never stop living our life.

Sita - Warrior of Mithila

Author

Sita - Warrior of Mithila released in 2017, is the second book of The Ram Chandra Series, written by Amish Tripathi. A renowned Indian author of the Shiva Trilogy series.

Genre

Fictional, Mythological Novel

Story

The story is a mythological fantasy based on the premises of the ancient Indian epic - Ramayan. The characters are the same and relatable. However, the story has a lot of differences from the Ancient History.

It is the story of Indian Queen Sita - adopted by King Janak and his wife Sunaina, shown to be fielding armies single-handedly and administering the Mithila efficiently.

The story narrates the challenges and struggles of the Sita, who is at once the minister of the kingdom, then exiled and then kidnapped by the demon Ravan.

My favourite character

My favourite character in the story is Sita. I love the way the author has carved out Sita's character in the novel.

The author has displayed Sita, as the boldest character. He did not show women less than men, but equals.

My opinion about this book

This book hints talking about women empowerment, portraying them like a brave, intelligent, and courageous individual.

This book illustrates the importance of moral choices in the path of "Dharma". Dharma encompasses not only righteousness but also the duties and obligations of a person in different roles of being a child, parent, wife, husband, and friend.

Why should you read it?

This book perhaps has one thing that we can learn ourselves, "giving due respect to women".

Ancient India always had high values and respect for a woman. However, if we look at the way, modern society treats its woman, it seems like people have forgotten all their morals and started becoming animals.

So, I present a few of my favourite lessons.

It is a highly recommended book for self-help. We can practice some of its lessons and improve our life.

The Great Gatsby

Author

The Great Gatsby is written by American fiction author F.Scott Fitzgerald in 1925.

Genre

Fiction, Tragic Novel

Story

It is a love story of a poor young man (Jay Gatsby) who created himself up to fabulous wealth to win back the woman (Daisy Buchan) he loves.

My opinion about this book

I was utterly fascinated by the charismatic persona of Mr Jay Gatsby because of his passion for love. However, his passion turns into madness and ends in a tragedy.

Also, the author presented an honest insight into the lives of the rich, criticising the duality and shallowness of American society.

Why should you read it?

This book nicely portrays human nature by showing how people are different in their private and public lives.

Also, it perfectly exemplifies the illusion that money can buy everything. However, in reality, it cannot buy happiness and love.

The author tries to show a mirror to the society which is full of materialism. However, it should focus on morals, love, family and changing the world to be better.

The Alchemist

Author

The Alchemist is a fictional novel written by Paulo Coelho in 1988.

Genre

Fictional, Fantasy, Inspirational

Story

It is the story of a young Spanish shepherd Santiago who faced many obstacles in his adventure to search for a treasure. The treasure that turned out to be beyond his wildest dream.

My opinion about this book

The book is a treasure in itself. It talks about pursuing our dreams and taking risks to reach our goals.

The author inspires us through Santiago's journey in search of the treasure. How he learns to listen to his heart and follow the language of omens, with each passing obstacle, the young boy learns lessons for life.

Why should you read it?

We all have dreams, but sometimes we are afraid to follow them.

The book explores the meaning of "Living the dream". It encourages us to live our legend and never give up on our dream.

I have been inspired by this book so much and certainly recommend everyone to read.

As the book says, "When you want something badly, the entire universe conspires in helping you to achieve it".

Hope you guys find the list of the books interesting and helpful. Please let me know your thoughts on them in comments below.
